Suggestion - Character Gender Customization

Hello Classcraft community and creators!

The topic of non-cisgendered characters has been something I have been thinking about since I first started using Classcraft in September. After reviewing the only thread on the topic (from 2017) I would like to make a suggestion that creates inclusivity with as little work for the Classcraft developers as possible.

I understand that creating non-binary characters portraits is ideal but unreasonable considering how much art would have to be commissioned for all the outfits for all three classes.

So here is my simple solution:

Pronoun selection during character creation

In order to make this function, when a student picks a character class they can pick between any of the avatars available (currently separated between male and female with attached pronouns) and then pick pronouns from a drop down list.

I understand that this is not suitable for every teacher, grade or school so it should be a toggle-able option during class creation.

Obviously, having non-binary character art would also be amazing, however this is a start that will help students (and teachers) of all genders fell included in the game.

Would love to hear any feedback on this idea and hope the developers will take it into consideration.

(Also, in the future, can we see "gendered" costume options - like the pink vs blue furry cape from the winter costume options - extended to all avatars?)

Wow, really good suggestion, London!

I'm sending this to our developers and designers to give them ideas on how to better include everyone in Classcraft :)

Love this idea!!  The ability to select pronouns for avatars would be great as would an avatar option that doesn't read as specifically male or female.  A wider range of skin tone options would also be appreciated for more students to see themselves in their avatar!

Hi! Our school is just beginning to use Classcraft, and while we are enthusiastic about it overall, we've noticed that it doesn't align with our school values about supporting our LGBTQ students and creating a safe learning environment that doesn't other them (which is our moral responsibility as educators, and also our legal duty). Many people in our community (teachers, students, families) use nonbinary pronouns. Therefore, it feels unethical to us to require our students to choose between binary pronouns.

Please update the pronouns to reflect greater gender diversity. I imagine this could be done really quickly if it was viewed as a priority. Please make it a priority.

Additionally, please review the artwork. Create avatars that are more diverse. It is not acceptable to tell students to choose the Mage with the covered up face as a nonbinary option because that sends a message that LGBTQ identities should be hidden, whereas we want to normalize students' experiences and treat them with respect.

Thank you for your attention to these urgent issues! While we are enthusiastic about the program, addressing these concerns will allow us to embrace it fully and integrate it fully into our culture and curriculum.

Hi everyone, just wanted to jump in quickly to let you all know that, as of last week, all gendered pronouns have been removed from Classcraft when describing the avatars!

Thank you for taking action on this!

Thank you for taking action! However, I am still seeing an overall 'him' gender applied to each character. For instance, when a parent awards GP, it will always say awarded 'him' GP. Can this be changed?

Hi Olivia, would you mind contacting support@classcraft.com with a screen capture of one of these instances of a 'him'?

I'm unable to reproduce it on my end and all gendered pronouns seem to have been removed.
