Mob Battles

I recently have been trying what I call "Mob Battles" with my students. I always start my classes with a Kahoot (however, this is something that could be done with Quizziz or something similar). Usually these have between 10 and 20 questions, so they don't take a lot of time to go through. Many times I use the same Kahoots over and over again so students get that basic knowledge into their memory. I mostly use them as formative assessments and not as summative.

A few weeks ago I decided to give them XP and GP based on the percentage correct they get on the Kahoots. So, if a student got all of the questions correct on the Kahoot they would get 100 XP and 50 GP (I mostly give half of the XP in GP for my students).

This last week I was thinking of how I could do a "Mob Battle" with my students and came up with the idea to use these same Kahoots to do it. What I've added is the students will be docked HP for the percentage incorrect on the Kahoots. So, if a student got 88% of the questions correct they would receive -12 HP, 88 XP, and 44 GP. I use "Delayed Damage" so we wouldn't have to take time in class to try and protect them.

I try to get these points in while my students are working on something, but that doesn't always happen, so I remind them they have until the next morning before I deal the damage out. When I have time to enter in the points during class I will give them the last five minutes of class to go into their accounts and have them protect each other. Yesterday I had one student who used his power to give his team AP so that the warriors on his team could then protect him from his damage (which was a -33 HP). It was pretty cool to see him coordinate and lead his team in using their powers to help.

I also remind them how their teams can work (i.e. Mages can give AP to Warriors to protect or to Healers to give HP). This has so far been an interesting experiment as I see my students working with their teams more often.

I also do something similar and have named it something similar, "Mob Attack". This is meant to meant to mimic a random encounter a gamer would experience in a role playing game.  The key is that these attacks are unannounced.  I flicker the lights to signal the beginning of an attack, which causes each team to grab a white board and dry erase marker.  I put up a series of questions (just black background powerpoint slides) one at a time.  I ask for all teams to hold up their answers, then I mark on my sheet if they got them correct or incorrect.  I tally up the totals at the end and students receive XP for each correct answer, and lose HP for each incorrect answer (as delayed damage).  I usually release the damage by the end of the day.  Keeping a running total has helped speed up the process because I noticed I was getting bogged down applying XP and HP loss after each question.
