Class Store

I have started an item shop in my classroom. Students can use GP to buy one-time passes that function similar to other class powers. Although I love the fact that each class has a different "skill set," I wanted to allow each student to have the possibility to experience some of the other "powers."

This shop can easily be adapted to fit whatever you want to "sell." I printed out little tickets and laminated them so that students will actually get a physical item when they buy. They hand in the ticket when they want to use the power.

I teach middle school, so my shop is open at the very beginning and very end of class (or between classes) so that we are not interrupting instruction to deal with the item shop.

Also, this post could function as a suggestion to add an in-game item shop to Classcraft so that the gold and tickets/powers could be managed automatically.

This is great!  Are you willing to share your tickets?

I think an item shop is a great idea.  I made some cards using Pages, but I'll post my PDF versions here.  I have a mana potion, health potion, and a back for my cards.  I am still working on about 5 more cards (green, purple, yellow, white, and black), but don't know what I want them to be yet.

Any feedback is appreciated!

I love the designs! I feel like a set of cards like that would be so much more satisfying to play in class, especially when you come up with the rest of the card ideas! If there's any constructive criticism I can provide, it would be that the resolution of the Classcraft logo on the back seems a little pixelated. I only noticed it because the rest of the cards look so good!

If you remember, add to this thread when you come up with the rest of the cards. I would love to see them!

Here are my new and improved item cards!  These are just screenshots, so hopefully the resolution is good enough to see.  Each card has a description and cost (GP) associated.  Enjoy!

These are great! I love the design and creativity behind each card.

I notice that you have several cards that are allow students to "attack" other classmates. I'm interested in finding a way to add a level of PvP to my class, but I'm worried about creating too much animosity between students/teams. How do you balance that concept of friendly competition without it getting too personal? I teach 7th grade.

Also, how do you run your mob attacks? Just regular boss battles?

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback!  I've incorporated PvP the past couple of years (9th and 10th grade) and the one thing I've learned from student surveys is that they would like a way to affect other students for friendly competition.  I'm trying it out this year, especially with the "Envenom" card and I'll see how it goes I suppose.

My "mob attacks" are random encounters during class (think pop quiz, but not for a grade).  In the link below, I've kept track of a few different things I've done with Classcraft with detailed descriptions:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4jQ9EqReAq6WWpoa3FYR0xyMWM

Hope this helps give you some ideas!

Man, those are awesome! Is there any chance you could upload a template or something if someone (myself included obviously) wanted to customize their own cards? I love the idea, but would like to tweak the descriptions towards my own class.

Daniel: I hope you don't mind, but in response to Jordan, I erased the descriptions on the cards so that it can be customizable.

All you need is a decent knowledge of overlaying text on images. This can be easily done in Word.

Looks great!  Thanks for doing that, Jihae!  If anyone comes up with different versions, please share them.

I too do the same thing and would benefit greatly is the developers create a shop interface where teachers can sell items to students who spend their gold.

For example I put a little shop interface on my Haiku webpage that allows students to buy candy, stickers, and free time on their computers. I do like the idea of using tickets to allow students to experience other class powers. I would probably sell that in the form of potions. Potion of Invisibility for instance can grant a student the invisibility power of the mage even if they're a warrior.

**UPDATE** i just saw the potion/item cards posted within this thread. Those look great and thanks for sharing Jijae

Thanks Jared

Below is a screenshot of my store...

Thanks so much for those shop ideas Daniel.  I am looking to start ClassCraft after spring break and wanted to have a store in place and ready to go.  I used your templates when making my items.  Here's a link to my store!  https://sites.google.com/usd422.org/mathcraft/mathcraft-store

Thomas

Daniel Veve, I love the card images. I have used them in the online store that I have created for my classes using a Google Doc (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ylfzs9xO5IjHeriJ2l6oTRfGL55RsFxVvK-OYlLCAeQ/edit?usp=sharing). I publish it to the web (in the File menu of the Google Doc) and make it into a web page (https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRcXe-_aTxO9OTzXMeG3d4FSyn_N4saCWEX9WRz1_TAKWFwIKGpPRN2GcGAkDYGfdmmkKbpuc_1P4qs/pub) for my students to see. The link at the top of the page goes to a Google Form that I created (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1cuZJKRDkExmerVOvIgDPNpEnSVbZ--QmLioX_1dHZek/edit - this is just a copy as I usually restrict the one I use to our district domains). I always set up the spreadsheet that contains the responses to the form to email me when the form has a submission (in the spreadsheet use the Tools menu, click on Notification rules). That way I have an email to tell me when students have submitted something to purchase. I will tell them that I take care of purchases after school, so then I can take my time getting it done.

(The G2S items are our school PBIS system called "Goals 2 Success" where there is a store where they can purchase physical items (sodas, games, etc.) with their G2S points. I have only had a few students purchase those as they are more interested in buying equipment for their avatars on ClassCraft--love it!)

These are fantastic ideas! I love the idea of a shop and of PvP. I'm thinking of including in the shop a way to draw a card to start PvP - buy a random draw that might make a team lose XP or start a short team competition, etc. The Google form is a great idea so you don't get mobbed with 30 students all wanting to buy something. I can't wait to start using these ideas!

Thomas Derstein could you please share a copy of your store with me? Id love to use this with my class.

These are some great ideas, and if anyone is looking for a great template or card-building platform to use, MtGCardsmith.com is a wonderful site to use.  I have shared a blog I put together which was published yesterday and got some good feedback through the "twitter-sphere," but I also know that not everyone involved in Classcraft is on Twitter and only a few of those who are actually are aware of my account (@ATeachersTeach).

Classcraft Cards to Enhance Gamification

Let me know if there are any details you'd like to know. I'd be flattered to gain any followers or have you visit my profile on Twitter to retweet the posting of this link (it's my pinned tweet at the top of my profile).

The community support and forums - just one more reason to LOVE Classcraft!

Charlie Mirus, I've taken a look at your blog and your cards look nice. Is there any chance that you could share them with us? I've started creating some on my own but it will take some time to have enough card to integrate them in my Classcraft game. I will share them once they are complete :-)

Patrick (and anyone else interested):
One great thing about mtgcardsmith.com is that it’s a community built on sharing ideas with each other. All my cards, and any future cards I create, are visible by doing a search on there.

This address should do that for you: https://mtgcardsmith.com/search?q=Charlesmirus

If that doesn’t work to copy/paste into your web browser, go to the mtgcardsmith.com and type in my username in the search bar located in the page. My user name, not creatively, is my name put together: charlesmirus.

Also, just as a suggestion, if you are thrifty like me m, and don’t want to do the paid account on cardsmith, you might want to save your image files for quick reference. If you realize a typo, error, or just want to revise a card after realizing it could be better, free accounts cannot edit previously-made cards once they are published to the cardsmith site. I title mine things like “Burst of Energy - Artwork” and save them within my google drive.

If you, Patrick, or anyone else would like to post your own cardsmith account so the Classcraft community can get ideas or use cards others have created, I think that would be a great idea! Of course, everyone runs his/her own game a little differently (some with language like “guild” instead of “team” - or various other ways), so it might not be possible to do an exact copy, but I think it’s a great idea!

-Charlie

Hi Charlie,

wow thank you for the link it will be surely useful :-).

Do you use any logo for the back side of the card? it seems like mtgcardsmith only give you the front side. Is there a way to make a back side as well. Sorry I am a bit of a newbie at this.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Patrick.

I personally don't use anything on the back.  I thought about it - and it would be super nice, but I also know that color ink is expensive and I'm flying "under the radar" on printing/copying things out in color right now :)

I do use the back to write three things in order to "track" the card's legitimacy, though.
1) I write the student's name, since cards in my class are non-transferable and not tradable.
2) I sign my name.
3) I write the date I issued the card.

In addition, with cards that can be used multiple times, I leave room on the back to record when it was used so I know if the next time is the last time they can use it, if it will cost more the next time (as is a stipulation for some cards), etc. With cards like "Win Lose or Draw" I also record who is the "current" owner of the card since it can go back and forth between students, based on that card's rules.

A great source of inspiration from all of this, as acknowledged in the blog I wrote, I Jason Howse (@MrHExperience on Twitter) and his Age of Heroes Game (@MrH_AOH on Twitter), which I definitely recommend you check out, too.  His cards, which he shared with me the same way I mentioned above, are available on Cardsmith using his username: MrHExperience.  He does get way more involved, including some PvP aspects that I don't use, but it's a fun time checking his cards out (and stealing some ideas along the way).

-Charlie

As an update to my previous discussion with Charlie Mirus. I've made some Classcraft cards using the website MTG and the result is quite good. I've plasticized them for obvious reason (I don't want to have to reprint those anytime soon). Here are some example of the front and back of the cards. Some are for battles and some are for assignments and homework etc.

Patrick,

Those look amazing!  I thought about using the "Create a token" option on MTGCardsmith.com to create my cards, but it limited me a bit in terms of text size - or seemed to.  Maybe my cards are just too wordy (haha)?  I use the "Make M15 Card" option and like how it turns out, but I also like your design, as well.  I agree that with doing the back of the cards full color, too, the plastic is a good way to go.

I'm wrapping up things for the year - exams are next week - but already looking forward to the start of next school year and the chance to use Classcraft, and especially its quest feature, more thoroughly!  I hope that your students enjoy the cards - it's clear you've put a great deal of work into the cards and ideas you've been putting together!  Keep it up!

Charlie, Yes I used the M15 card but some of the card but I liked the token because of the size of the pictures was bigger. But it did limit the amount of text so for those where I needed more text I used the M15. I've also printed some of your cards as well since they were insteresting :-D.

Great idea!  I do like the look of the token card, for sure!  Feel free to print what you'd like from my things.  I did notice one mistake with one, though - I think it's Sanctuary of Atlantis - it requires 40 AP on the card, but the default for Healers and Warriors is 35 and 30 AP respectively, so I made a hand-written change on my cards for now and will make a new version of that with 30 AP instead when I can :)  Good think I saved all the artwork files, because I don't pay the extra money for the editing option within Cardsmith :)

I'll have to look yours up when I can.  What's your username on the website, if you don't mind sharing?

Thanks!

Here is my username on MTG patboy01.   My card are mostly related to battles (I would say 80%). If you like some of the artworks then just tell me the name of the cards and I can send you the artwork via email. :).  I had RPG like Final Fantasy in mind when I did some of the cards (like ice 1, 2,3 etc). Also some cards are character specific (mage, warrior, healer). I've noted if the card is for EVERYONE or for a specific character at the bottom of the card . The black cards for example are for the mages, as mentioned at the bottom left corner of the card.

Thanks.

Inspired by everyone here, I have created my own item cards.

Here is a Google Drive link to the full folder, with card images and a list of all cards: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1BX5djI_VBylmyJHximXd6pbBo11GHPn2?usp=sharing

I have created a deck of 384 cards that I will rotate in and out as cards are sold in the store.  There are 18 of each common, 12 of each uncommon, 5 of each rare and 3 of each mythic rare.

Here is the card list:

Item Name Effect Flavor Text Cost
Small Health Potion Gain HP equal to the roll of a die plus five. The liquid inside glows faintly with a red light. 100
Large Health Potion Gain HP equal to the roll of two dice plus ten. A mild heat radiates out from the vial. 250
Colossal Health Potion Gain HP equal to the roll of three dice plus fifteen. When the vial is touched, your body feel curiously warm. 400
Small Mana Potion Gain AP equal to the roll of a die plus five. The liquid inside glows faintly with a blue light. 100
Large Mana Potion Gain AP equal to the roll of two dice plus ten. A mild chill radiates out from the vial. 250
Colossal Mana Potion Gain AP equal to the roll of three dice plus fifteen. When the vial is touched, your body feel curiously cold. 400
Stygian Water Unlearn all of your powers, refunding all power points and allowing you to choose new powers. Far off from these a slow and silent stream,/ Lethe the River of Oblivion rolls/ Her wat'ry Labyrinth whereof who drinks,/ Forthwith his former state and being forgets,/ Forgets both joy and grief, pleasure and pain. -John Milton 500
Ring of Reflex Avoid the effects of one event, must be used immediately before or after an event is rolled. Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast, I would catch it. -Drax the Destroyer 300
Mirror of Kalandra Copy the effects of an event or item to yourself. Must be played immediately after
the event or item is played.
What do you see in the mirror? 400
Rod of Asclepius Copy a healer power know by a healer on your team. I will use treatment to help the sick according to my ability and judgment, but never with a view to injury and wrong-doing. -Hippocrates 250
Aegis Copy a warrior power known by a warrior on your team. Aegis-beating Zeus has a design for each occasion, and mortals find this hard to comprehend. -Hesiod 250
Merlin's Wand Copy a mage power known by a mage on your team. T'is true: there's magic in the web of it... -William Shakespeare 250
Death Ward Cancel the effects of one sentence. It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live. -Marcus Aurelius 300
Weighted Dice The next time you roll dice, instead roll them twice and ignore one of the rolls. When God throws, the dice are loaded. 200
Dark Sigil The next time you would receive XP, you receive 25% more and lose HP equal to the sum of four dice. True success requires sacrifice. -Rick Riordan 400
Duelist Sword You and a player from another team with a duelist sword can use this card at the same time. Both students wager an equal amount of GP. Roll a die. The high roll wins that amount and the low roll loses that amount. If there is a tie, both players lose the GP and 10 HP. We should restore the practice of dueling. It might improve manners around here. -Edward Abbey 250
Healing Salve Restore 15 HP to another player. If used on a teammate, you lose 15 AP. If used on a non-teammate, no AP is lost. Pain will come with time, but time will heal the pain. -Anthony Liccione 250
Blessed Lyre You may listen to music while working individually for the remainder of the class period (must use your own headphones and no YouTube) Where words fail, music speaks. -Hans Christian Andersen 300
Writ of Passage You may go to the bathroom or get a drink of water without having to use a power. The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. -Lao Tzu 150
Cornucopia You may eat food that you have brought with you for the remainder of class. Growing your own food is like printing your own money -Ron Finley 300
Cloak of Invisibility You can play school-appropriate games of your choice instead of choice activities. If you are distracting to others, the magic is lost. I don't know why people are so keen to put the details of their private life in public; they forget that invisibility is a superpower. -Banksy 500
Volatic Glove The next ability you use costs no AP When life gives you lemons, construct a crude electrochemical battery. 250
Dust of Confusion Be up to 5 minutes late to class with no penalty. This card must be purchased at least one day before you are late. If confusion is the first step to knowledge, I must be a genius. -Larry Leissner 400
Quill Pen Receive a pencil from the teacher, or have the teacher sharpen your pencil. With a goose-quill and a few sheets of paper, I mock myself of the universe. -Pietro Aretino 200
Orb of Storms Trigger an event. If it selects random teams or players, you may choose the targets. This event cannot be rewound. There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm. -Willa Cather 500
Bonding Totem Choose another classmate. All HP/XP/GP gains and losses from the period are duplicated on yourself True friends are families which you can select. - Audrey Hepburn 300
Revolutionary Pennant Assemble a new team with up to 5 willing classmates. This may cause changes in other teams if the team is left with less than 4 members or without a particular class type. I hold it that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing... - Thomas Jefferson 600
Power Bracers Add up to 10% to an assignment, cannot exceed 100%. Can be used after assignment has been graded. Cannot be used on an assignment that was graded before the card was obtained. Power is dangerous unless you have humility. -Richard Daley 500
Quartermaster's Token You may borrow headphones or webcam without ID. The battle is fought and decided by the quartermasters, long before the shooting begins. -Erwin Rommel 200
Invisible Ink You may skip one question, up to 10 points worth, on any assignment. Must be used before assignment is due. Poetry is written with tears, fiction with blood, and history with invisible ink. -Carlos Ruis Zafon 400
Phoenix Down When the cardholder or a classmate falls in battle, phoenix down will revive him/her, removing any sentence given and restoring the player to half health. This also prevents damage to teammates of the player. Hope rises like a phoenix from the ashes of shattered dreams. -S. A. Sachs 500
Wall of Force When playing wall of force, the player will add, rather than subtract, the amount of HP the cardholder was about to lost. (For example, if the player would be about to lose 15 HP, they gain 15 HP instead.) May the force be with you, always. -Obi-Wan Kenobi 300
Healer's Rod All healers in the class gain 20 HP The greatest healing therapy is friendship and love. -Hubert H. Humphrey 300

Time Walk Trigger an event. This event cannot be rewound. The two most powerful warriors are patience and time. -Leo Tolstoy 300

I also made some custom card backs:

Some of my favorite cards:

There are lots more in the Google Drive file, take a look!

PS: I decided to make the cards have square corners so that they would be easier to cut.  I didn't like the idea of rounding 384*4 corners.

Douglas Gebhart these are awesome, could you please share the folders with me? The link you provided sends empty folders.

My email is leev@pillanspoint.school.nz

Douglas,

I had the same problem with the folders that Lee mentioned above.  I think the cards you mad here are terrific and it's great that you have based them around what your students clearly have found beneficial and/or what they desire.  Keep up the great work, and let me know if you need any help with the sharing permissions - it might just be a minor detail you've overlooked, or possibly something that's outside of your own setting controls.

Charlie

P.S. You all keep inspiring me on this idea - so thankful for the Cc community and forums!

Ok, should be fixed now.  They were retaining old permissions from my school account.

Douglas Gebhart - you are amazing.... I showed my class today and they lost it! Thank you so much man

All of these ideas are amazing! I can't wait to incorporate cards into my classroom.
