Class progression and chapters — your very own Classcraft journey!
Note: If you created your class using the Quick setup option, the class progression and chapters will not be available for you. You'll automatically have all the features.
We know that when a teacher starts their Classcraft adventure, they’ll need to learn a lot of things. To help you out, we split the progression into four distinct chapters that you'll discover naturally over time.
You can experience Classcraft at your own pace, acquiring smaller bits of knowledge at a time rather than try to learn everything at once — unless that’s what you want to do!
Let’s see how it works:
- Class progression
Core to the experience, the class progression has two purposes:
- Guide you from one chapter to the next
- Act as a repository of tutorials and coaching
Unique to each of your classes, the class progression is represented by a bar that fills over time as you give Experience Points to your students. It lets you know how many you've given and how many you need to give to naturally complete the chapter you're currently on.
On average, we expect teachers to progress chapters every three weeks, but this is by no means a hard rule — take things at your own pace!
Because it’s at the heart of the experience and because the class progression can act as a motivator both for you and your students, it has a central place on the Class Dashboard.
This is a quick view that tells you how far you’ve gotten in the current chapter, but it does not do much to tell you what features you have access to!
If you don't need this information, click the X button or toggle in the top right corner. To access the expanded view of the class progression, click the Continue my journey button!
The expanded view of the class progression has far more information than the bar you can see on your Class Dashboard. Let’s break it down:
- Chapter navigation
- Current chapter and chapter title
Click on the button to view a video presenting the chapter's story to your students.
- Teacher tutorials for features and tools (blue cards)
- Setup steps that must be completed to progress in the chapter (orange cards)
- Next chapter preview and proceed to next chapter
A card that’s been completed is marked with a green checkmark (). If you’ve already completed a feature tutorial, clicking the card will give you an overview of the feature or tool.
Class Tools tutorials can be played over and over again from your class progression. If you’re not sure what something is, try clicking the card!
If you want to see what you can expect in the next chapters, you can scroll left or click on the chapter tabs in the upper part of the screen. You can even view tutorials for upcoming features through the class progression!
When you’re done or want to return to your Class Dashboard, hit the Escape key or click the gray X button in the upper right corner.
Hiding the class progression bar
Maybe you've already completed Chapter 4 or have found a chapter you're comfortable on and feel the bar is taking too much space on your screen. There are three ways to hide it from your Class Dashboard:
- In your class settings' Interface section, enable or disable the Show the class progression bar on the Class Dashboard option
- Click the X in the top right corner of the class progression bar to hide it
- Click the class progression toggle in the top right corner of the Class Dashboard to show or hide the class progression bar
Note that the class progression bar will automatically be reenabled when you reach certain points in the chapter but you can dismiss it again!
How is progression calculated?
As you give Experience Points to your students, you'll naturally progress from one chapter to the next. Where these Experience Points come from does not matter: you can use positive behaviors, quests, class tools, etc. Once your Class Progression bar fills up we'll nudge you to move on to the next chapter (unless you're already done with Chapter 4!)
You may be wondering how we know the amount of Experience Points needed to fill the bar ... Well, it's not a secret so we'll tell you! The amount is equal to:
Total number of students in your class x Your class' level cap x 3
For example, if you have 25 students in your class and the level cap (amount of Experience Points needed to level up) is 750, once you've given 56,250 Experience Points to your students, we'll nudge you to go from Chapter 1 to Chapter 2.
This also means that as you're adding or removing students or changing the level cap, the total amount may vary but no need to worry, we'll make sure no progress is lost!
If you don't want to wait that long, you can always click on your Class Progression and check the next chapter's overview to progress manually.
During your Classcraft journey, you’ll naturally progress through four chapters, plus an introduction. Each chapter introduces you to new tools and features and guides your whole class towards even more intrinsic motivation.
Each chapter is fully functional on its own, which means that you can decide where you feel the most comfortable or how long you want to take to progress to the next chapter.
Speaking of chapters, let’s go over them real quick, shall we?
Unlike the other chapters, the Introduction needs to be completed before you can actually use Classcraft. As long as you haven’t completed your Introduction, you won’t be able to give Experience Points to your students.
Consider the Introduction chapter as your initial setup: you need it complete before you can move on to the next chapter.
Unlike other chapters, the Introduction has no story elements — we’re making sure it’s as short and streamlined as possible. Here’s what you’ll have access to:
- Tutorial: Experience Points, levels, and powers
- Setup: Select positive behaviors and powers
- Setup: Add your students
Once you’re done with this, we’ll invite you to proceed to Chapter 1 where you’ll learn more about the tools and have time to familiarize yourself with Classcraft.
Don’t forget that you can’t remain in the Introduction and play Classcraft!
Here’s what you’ll learn about and be able to use in each chapter:
- Chapter 1
- Give Experience Points for good behavior
- Use universal powers that grant special privileges by spending Crystals
- Volume Meter
- Random Picker
- Chapter 2
- Gold Pieces
- Student account creation
- Characters without classes (appearance only)
- Basic gear & pets
- School Store (if applicable)
- Chapter 3
- Character classes and their unique gear, pets, and powers
- Random Events
- Chapter 4
- Hearts and negative behaviors
- Game-based powers (like Heal or Protect)
- Hearth and Crystal regeneration
- Class Tools with Hearts
- Formative Review
- Grade Converter
Once you feel ready and have completed the setup steps for a chapter, you can move on to the next. We’ll invite you to do so when you fill the progression bar, but if you want to switch before, you can!
To do so, open the expanded class progression screen and select the last step of the chapter you’re on:
A video from our learning team specialists will introduce you to the features you can expect to unlock in the following chapter. If you feel ready for the challenge, click Proceed and you’ll automatically be taken to the next chapter!
Your school or district may decide to lock certain Chapters. If you want to unlock features from chapters you don’t have access to due to your school’s settings, try contacting the person responsible for implementing Classcraft at your school!
