Adding and managing students

Now that you’ve created and set up your class, you can add students to start the adventure. Then you can group them into teams and introduce them to the game.

Adding students to your class

It’s only possible to add students via the desktop version of Classcraft. Log in at game.classcraft.com on your computer to get started!

You can add students during your class setup or at any time by accessing your class settings. After the initial setup, go to your class settings, open the “Students” section, and click the green “Add Students” button at the top.

If you’re playing Classcraft with a license provided by your district or school, you can only add students from the Student Database. If you want students added to the school or district roster, please contact the person in charge of implementing Classcraft at your school.

If you’re already using Classcraft and want to add students from another one of your classes, you can use your own Student Database. You’ll use the same database for adding students from teachers you’re connected to through the Teacher Connect feature.

Add from the school or district Student Database

Proceed to the “Students” section of your class settings (Class_settings_icon.png) and click on the green “Add Students” button above your student list. Because you’re part of a school or district using Classcraft, your school’s Student Database will be displayed:

You can’t add students to your school’s Student Database manually. If you can’t find the students you’re looking for, please contact the person responsible for implementing Classcraft at your school.

If you prefer adding students who are already in the database using Google Classroom or a class code, click on “Other Ways to Add Students.”

Manually create new accounts

If you’re not part of a school or district that’s playing Classcraft, click on the green “Add Students” button in the “Students” part of your class settings. You can then select “Create New Accounts” or “Add Existing Students.”

If your students have never played Classcraft before and you don’t use Google Classroom, click on “Create New Accounts” and select “Add Students Manually” to create accounts for them.

Enter every student’s first and last name. If you need to add lines, click on the “+Add More” button. After entering the information for all of your students, click on the “Create Accounts” button to add them to your class.

Create accounts or assign students using Google Classroom

If you’re not part of a school or district that’s playing Classcraft, click on the green “Add Students” button in the “Students” part of your class settings. You’ll then have the option to “Create New Accounts” or “Add Existing Students.”

Click on “Create New Accounts” and then on “Use Google Classroom” to view a list of your Google Classrooms. You may need to sign in to Google Classroom first. Select students from your Google Classroom classes. Once you have selected the students to add, click on “Create Accounts” (or “Assign to Class” if you’re using a school license).

Notes:

  • If your students use Google Classroom and they have played Classcraft before (but no longer are), you’ll need to give them your class code instead. Your students may need to archive their characters first.
  • If your students are already playing Classcraft with their Google Classroom account, add them from your Student Database instead.

Adding students from your personal Student Database

To add students who are playing Classcraft in another one of your classes, or with another teacher you’re connected to, proceed to your class settings and select “Students.” Click on the green “Add Students” button and then “Add Existing Students.”

Select “Use Student Database” to view a list of all the students playing Classcraft in one of your classes. Should you want to add students from another teacher’s class, you’ll first need to connect via Teacher Connect. In the Student Database, you can search students by their name, username, or their teacher’s name. Select all the students you want to add to your class and click on the “Assign to Class” button.

Provide your class code

To add students who have played Classcraft with another teacher before but who are no longer playing, proceed to your class settings and select “Students.” Click on the green “Add Students” button and select “Add Existing Students.”

Ask your students to archive their characters if they haven’t already. If they can’t archive their characters because they’re still active, consider using the Teacher Connect feature instead.

If you’re part of a school or district using Classcraft, only students that are part of the school’s Student Database can use your class code. If your students see an error message, they might need to be added to the Student Database first. To do so, you should contact the person responsible for implementing Classcraft at your school.

When you provide a class code to your students, they must go to their account profile and input the code in the class code field.

Tip: Display the screen with the class code on a projector for students to see. As they join your class, you’ll see their names appear on the list.

Dividing students into teams

After adding your students to your class, you can divide into teams. You may choose to do this during your class setup or skip this step and complete it later.

To edit teams at any moment, proceed to your class settings (Class_settings_icon.png) and select “Teams.”

On the lefthand side of the screen, you’ll see a list of students who are not currently assigned to any team. Drag and drop students into teams or to the “Add a Team” section to create a new team. If you need to remove a student from a team, drag and drop their name in the left portion of the screen. You can switch teams around at any time!

Click the pencil button to customize a team’s name, crest, and background.

Here are some tips to help you create your teams:

  • Choose the teams yourself to encourage better student dynamics.
  • Aim for about 4-5 students per team, if you can.
  • Divide them into teams based on academics, to have a mix of academically strong and weak students.
  • When students choose their characters, make sure they have at least one Warrior, one Mage, and one Healer on their team. This ensures that they'll have access to all the essential powers in the game.

Introducing students to Classcraft

Once you’ve set up your class and added your students, you’ll be ready to introduce the game to your students.

Our "Introducer" feature explains the game to students and helps them to customize their teams if you didn’t do so before. It’s best used when displayed to your whole class at once.

Find the class on your Teacher Dashboard and click on the “...” to open the submenu. Click on “Introducer” to begin. This feature will run you through the following:

  • Play the "What Is Classcraft?" video for your students.
  • Explain what Health Points (HP), Experience Points (XP), Gold Pieces (GP), and sentences are. Print out the Rules Summary (Game Rules) document as a reference for your students and yourself.
  • Show them the different character classes and explain what makes them unique.
  • Review the teams and let students pick their team name, crest, and background.
