Class Tools – Boss Battles (Adventures in the Wild)

*Boss Battles are a Premium feature

Boss Battles are fun ways to prepare your students for tests and quizzes and assess their learning. They are meant as a way to review for formative assessments during class, and students answer questions out loud in the classroom.

Boss Battles can be found within the Class Tools, which are identified by the scroll icon on the left sidebar.

Creating a boss battle

To create a boss battle, proceed to the “Tools” section of your game dashboard in any of your classes and select “Boss Battles.” Click on “+ New” to create a new boss battle. Enter a name for your boss battle, select a creature your students will need to defeat, and enter the boss’s total HP.

To create a new question for this boss battle, click on the green “+Add a New Question” button. Alternatively, you may use one or several questions created for a previous boss battle by clicking on “Use Existing.”

Enter questions with multiple choice or short answer responses. You can always reuse your questions later in new quizzes by accessing your Question Bank.

When setting HP, the total number of HP value of the questions should be 1.5 x the boss's health. You'll want to have enough questions that students can miss one or two and still win the battle.

Also, don’t forget that if students incorrectly answer a question, they will take the damage value for the question. Try to avoid values that would cause too much damage to students.

When you have set all your questions, proceed to the options to set a reward for the boss battle, which may be XP, GP, or both. You can also choose to display the questions in a random order and/or to disable critical hits and misses, which may occur when the boss or students deal damage.

To edit a boss battle after its creation, find it in the boss battles list and click on the pen icon. From this list, you can also add tags such as grade or subject to better organize your boss battles.

Using a boss battle

To start a boss battle, proceed to the “Tools” section of your game dashboard in any of your class and select “Boss Battles.” Select the boss battle you want to play in the list and click on “Next.”

When the Boss Battle begins, you can choose to have either random students or random teams answer each new question (to do so, click on "Class"), or you can have students from a single team (select "Team") or a single student (select "Student") to answer questions aloud as they appear onscreen.

If students answer a question correctly, they’ll deal damage to the boss. If students get a question wrong, the boss attacks! Sometimes attacks will miss or do critical damage, adding even more variety to the battle. You can activate or deactivate this random element from the boss battle options.

If your class is victorious, they’ll earn XP and GP as a reward.

A flawless victory pays double the points!

Tip: Rewards are distributed automatically and depend on whether you chose "Class" (rewards go to the whole class), "Team" (rewards go to that team), or "Student" (rewards go to that student) as an opponent.

Sharing and importing boss battles

You can share any boss battle in your list by clicking on the share button:

Before sharing a boss battle, make sure that the cumulative HP value of all questions is equal or greater than the boss’s total HP. If the question HP and boss HP don’t match, you’ll see the following warning:

The first time you share a boss battle, you’ll have to confirm that it respects the Teacher License Agreement. You can review your boss battle information (questions, answers, rewards, and HP values) before sharing it. Once ready, click on the green “Share” button in the upper right corner. You can share your quest by copying the share link or directly via Facebook, Twitter, or email by clicking on the corresponding button.

To import a boss battle, simply click on the link or paste it into your browser while logged in to a Classcraft teacher account. You can review the boss battle information before importing it. Once ready, click on the green “Import” button below the questions. You can edit a boss battle normally after importing it.
